Contractor to Fulfill Objectives for Grant Project: Shellfish Gardens, Kelp/Seaweed Mariculture, and Herring Reintroduction for Nature-Based Resilience to Coastal Hazards off Kake, Alaska

Contract Date: July 15, 2025 – April 15, 2026, with the opportunity to extend through 2027
Time Commitment: 20-40 hrs per week
Total Budget: not to exceed $51,307.92
OVK is hiring a Contractor to serve on the Working Group for planning and permits grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. All activities will relate to planning development of the shorelines near Kake. Three specific project areas for shoreline development to be considered are:
- Shellfish Gardens
- Kelp/Seaweed Mariculture
- Herring Reintroduction
The Contractor will be tasked with “thinking” like a municipality in decision-making for grant activities and will present at least once in 2025 and 2026 to Kake City Council.
The Contractor will take lead on outreach and engagement efforts in Kake and regionwide, with an emphasis on social media curation. The Contractor will also assist other team members with research, tracking expenditures, and reporting on the grant to the funders.
The Contractor will be expected to carry out work from offices at OVK, KTC, their own residence, and outside in the field as needed with the rest of the project team. The Contractor will be capable of some outdoor fieldwork but willing and able to prioritize computer time, social media time, and outreach with the public.
The Contractor will be experienced with Microsoft Office or equivalent (Google Workspace), comfortable with reading and writing, and able to carry out work objectives with very little supervision. The Contractor will report directly to Justin McDonald and Dawn Jackson at OVK, but will work day-to-day with other project team members as well.
Regular responsibilities:
- Weekly check-ins with Working Group Lead Elizabeth Figus
- Monthly meetings with the Working Group
- Complete weekly research achievements for each project
- Complete weekly outreach/engagement achievements
- Weekly calls with agency and other personnel with expertise relating to the project
- Monthly accomplishments updates provided to Justin and Dawn at OVK
- Attendance at Kake City Council meetings at least once every other month.
- Attendance at OVK Council meeting at least once during contract period
- Attend lunch at Senior Center at least once a month to discuss the project with residents
- Presentations at the Kake City Schools (K-12) at least 4 times during the contract period
Interested applicants should submit a proposal with a scope of work and budget, with a resume to Dawn Jackson (ed@kake-nsn.gov) before July 15, 2025. Bids will be assessed based on the experience of each contractor and cost effectiveness of each budget.
