Tribal Historic Preservation Office

The Organized Village of Kake is the only federally recognized tribe in Alaska that currently has a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO).
The Organized Village of Kake, through its Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO), assumed duties of the State Historic Preservation Officer on trust lands as allowed under the National Historic Preservation Act [16 U.S.C 470] Section 101 (d)(2), to protect Historic Properties and Cultural Traditions.
Federal and state agencies are required to contact the Organized Village of Kake THPO before any project begins. Traditional, cultural and sacred areas are not always known to other agencies and can be disrupted or destroyed. If you know any of these areas that needs to be protected because it was important to the Tlingit, please contact our office so we may mitigate, monitor and record any disturbance
Currently our major project is the rehabilitation of the Kake Cannery National Historic Landmark.
